Advanced Ergonomic Technologies - AET
AET are leading experts in commercial office underfloor air
conditioning systems, having advised and overseen the installation
of over 65 million square feet throughout the world in a wide
variety of climatic conditions and cultures. AET's Flexible Space System, a
modular, standardised system has been the clear UK market leader for
a number of years and has a proven track record in use. With today’s
emphasis on reducing energy usage wherever possible, AET have now
added an all-air free cooling underfloor system called PleinAir to
their range. This variable air volume system includes a ground
breaking modulating damper to overcome the problem of the lack of
air circulation traditionally associated with VAV systems.
What is Underfloor Air Conditioning?
-
Sometimes called UFAD, underfloor air
distribution utilises the space beneath raised access flooring
(plenum), very often, but not exclusively in commercial office
operations
-
Air is supplied at floor level & may return
either through the floor or at high level
Why Choose Underfloor Air Conditioning?
-
Only a very small increase in the space for
the distribution of power, data & telephones beneath the raised
access floor is necessary for inclusion of air distribution, so
making more efficient use of the building’s volume
-
Height saving over ceiling based systems
either in refurbishment or new construction because of the
reduced need or even abolition of ceiling ducting
-
Comfort levels are high with easy resolution
of any draught or overheating issues
-
Flexibility is ensured as air delivery is
made through easily relocatable raised access floor panels
-
Tax advantages are realised as the floor
system may be classed as Plant & Equipment, so attracting
improved Capital Allowances
-
Floor-based components are easily to fit
retrospectively in Shell & Core scenarios in a raised floor
void, so saving initial capital expenditure
-
Architectural freedom in the ceiling is
guaranteed if there is no need for ceiling ducting
Operation of the Original Flexible Space System
-
Floor standing, super quiet air handling
units serve zones of 100-300m˛
-
Silicone coated baffle material separates the
supply & return plena
-
Treated air is delivered into the supply
plenum
-
Fan-assisted terminals supply air from the
plenum into the space above
-
They are connected only by power & data
cabling – there are no ducts
-
Local control may be tempered by centrally
set parameters
-
Adjacent users may control both airflow &
temperature
-
The system also facilitates central
monitoring & control
-
Spent air is drawn back into the return
plenum through grilles in the floor
-
Optional ceiling-return systems are available
-
Fresh air is introduced into the return air
path
-
Air is cooled or warmed at the AHU by water
delivered from central plant
-
Riser requirements are minimal
-
Remote control optional
-
Anodised aluminium grilles are rectangular in
shape
Operation of the New PleinAir System
-
Pressurised air may be supplied to the plenum
by central plant or local air handling units
-
100% free cooling using central station air
handling units
-
Air is returned at high level
-
In cooling mode, passive tile units (PTUs)
deliver air into the workspace
-
PTUs have a unique time modulated air damper
for excellent throw
-
In heating mode, a fan-powered hot water or
electrical unit heats recirculated office air
-
Options for cooling only or heating/cooling
PTUs available
-
Wide variety of grille configurations,
colours & shapes
-
Both variable & constant volume tile units
are available
-
Local PTU control is an option
-
PTU connected only by power & data cabling –
there may be minimal ductwork in the plenum
-
Bacnet IP controls
AET would be delighted to discuss the comparisons
and advantages of either the Flexible Space or PleinAir systems for
your project.

second sequences, so giving improved air movement at all part-load
conditions.
