PART L2 of the Building Regulations (Conservation of fuel and
power) has been amended with effect from 1st April 2006 and now
includes a test for Air Leakage.
Buildings requiring compliance to part L2 with a gross floor area of
greater than 500m2 will require an air leakage test carried out in
accordance with ATTMA technical standard 1 (2006) and must be shown
to leak no more than 10m3/hr/m2 @ 50Pa or less than the figure given
in your SAPS calculations.
Despite the legal requirement, an energy efficient building has many
advantages, both financially and environmentally.
Air Leakage Testing Ltd are BINDT and UKAS registered and accredited
testers of all types of building. We can test both Domestic and
Commercial properties for air leakage, air tightness and air
permeability. Our accreditation for air testing is to ATTMA TS1
Issue 2 BS EN 13829:2001 and ISO/IEC 17205 (testing).
Air Permeability Testing explained
The air-tightness of a building is known as its 'air permeability'
or leakage rate. Air leakage can occur through gaps, holes or cracks
in the fabric of the building envelope which are not necessarily
visible to the naked eye. This air leakage affects the building's
performance and is now firmly enshrined in Part L of The Building
Regulations - conservation of fuel and power. Air tightness testing
and air permeability testing will highlight any problems with air
leakage so they can be remedied.

What if your building fails?
In the event of a fail, smoke testing and thermal imaging can
